Canoes, Carriages & Cars: The Role of Transportation in West Bloomfield's Past

WHAT: ISLAND OF TIME WEEKEND, TOURS OF APPLE ISLAND
WHEN: Saturday, May 17 (12-4pm) and Sunday, May 18 (12-3pm), 2008
WHERE: Orchard Lake Museum, at the corner of Orchard Lake and Long Lake roads

The Greater West Bloomfield Historical Society (GWBHS) is proud to host its annual Island of Time weekend, featuring tours of Orchard Lake’s Apple Island. This year’s theme, “Native Americans of West Bloomfield’s Past,” highlights the cultures, customs, and ways of life of our community’s earliest residents.

Tours of Apple Island will depart from the Orchard Lake Museum on Saturday, May 17 beginning at 12pm, with the last boat leaving at 4pm. Tours on Sunday, May 18 will begin at 12pm, with the last boat leaving at 3pm. Island visitors will explore the answer to the question: What would I need to live on Apple Island?

Before your tour, wander through our newly renovated museum and enjoy all the activities on the grounds. You’ll gain in-depth knowledge of this area’s First Nations, sample early crafts and games, learn about Native American boats and agricultural practices, and browse our outdoor galleria of shops (featured vendors include coffee, Sparky’s Hot Dogs, and Carvel Ice Cream).

There is no charge to enjoy the museum and grounds. Tours to Apple Island are first come, first served, and cost $10/adult and $5/child under 12. Please dress for the weather (Apple Island is approximately 10 degrees cooler than the mainland).
